The biomass sector offers significant potential for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The region has a substantial biomass resource in the form of arboricultural thinnings and arisings, energy crops, forestry and woodland co-products, post-consumer wood and primary processing products. Furthermore, being home to three biomass co-firing coal power stations and a raft of local authorities actively engaged in the sector, the region provides a substantial outlet for the utilisation of this resource.
FEY works closely with key players within the region’s biomass sector to help stimulate the supply chain. In December 2006, FEY funded the first regional woodfuel training course for biomass practitioners (http://www.ruraldevelopment.org.uk/). FEY is currently exploring a number of additional methods through which to stimulate the biomass supply chain, such as the development of a woodfuel trading website and standard woodfuel supply contracts.
Please contact Susannah Brown if you would like to find out more about FEY’s activities within the region’s biomass supply chain.

Future Energy Yorkshire has developed a regional biomass website, Biomass Energy Yorkshire (BEY). The aim of BEY is to be a one stop shop for information and advice specific to the biomass supply chain within the Yorkshire and Humber region. The three key objectives of BEY are:
- To provide regionally specific advice and information to aid the development of the biomass sector at a regional level;
- To raise the national profile of the region’s biomass sector; and
- To build upon and support the advice and information provided by the Biomass Energy Centre.
Key features of the website include:
- Biomass price index - providing up to date prices on a range of biomass fuels;
- Interactive map – showing the location and contact details of: biomass generators (heat and/or electricity); fuel suppliers; and biomass equipment installers and suppliers;
- Downloadable biomass contracts - incorporating relevant standards and quality assurance guidelines for a range of biomass;
- Marketplace – allowing suppliers and purchasers of biomass to post details of their products and requests;
- Regional case studies – providing details of where biomass projects have been successfully deployed in the region; and
- Regional news and events.
BEY can be accessed at www.fey.org.uk/bey . To find out more, please contact Sue Brown.
